An Islamic group has cautioned Muslims on the way they make use of Information Communication Technology (ICT)zm
The group, popularly called Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah Islamic Society of Nigeria, has also charged parents and guardians to ensure that their wards are ICT compliant in order to enable them teach and propagate Islam on social media platforms.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by the group after a 2-day training for Islamic preachers in Osogbo, Osun State.
In the communique, the group described ICT as a blessing in disguise for religion propagation.
The communiqué signed by Lawal Muhammad and Atanda Yusuf urged Muslim philanthropists to make modern gadgets available for the propagation of Islamic faith.
The group advised parents to guide their children against visiting wrong websites saying ICTs are a potentially powerful tool for extending religious teachings and for easy conversion and should be utilised for such.
The communique reads: “we strongly advise Muslim parents to take it upon themselves and ensure that their wards are trained in ICT and also watch them jealously over their usage of social media.
“There is need for more commitment to the propagation of Islam by Muslim philanthropists and provision of modern information technology gadgets for Muslim Da’wah workers.”
Though the group acknowledged that the social media contains dangerous sites and fora that tend to corrupt internet users, it asked Muslim faithful to be wary and maintain caution.
According to the group, Muslim faithful should desist from seeking Islamic knowledge from the internet but rather approach scholars of the religion whenever they need clarifications on Islam.
“The importance of acquiring information technology education is so enormous and it is an indispensable tool of Dawah. Students should cease from regarding the internet as teachers but should be encouraged to be closer to Islamic scholars and get knowledge from them,” they said.
