Civil servants in Makurdi resumed work on Thursday after the two-day public holidays to mark Eid el-Kabir celebrations.
The Federal Government had declared Aug. 21 and Aug. 22 as public holidays to enable workers to join other Nigerians to celebrate the festival.
A NAN correspondent, who visited the Benue State Secretariat, reports that workers’ turnout was impressive unlike during similar celebrations in the past.
The secretariat bubbled with activities with many civil servants seen carrying out their duties, while restaurants and business centres were agog with activities.
Some of the civil servants, who spoke with NAN, said that since they could not travel for the celebrations, due financial challenges, they had no reason not to be at work.
A senior civil servant, Mrs Joy Akusugh, said there was no need staying at home after the holidays.
Another officer, Mr John Idoko, said the two-day break was okay for anyone to have rested, adding that being in office today was expected of any diligent worker.
NAN correspondent, however, observed that there was low turnout of customers at various banks and shopping malls.
A businesswoman, Mrs Sedoo Sule, said the low turnout of customers might be due to the current economic situation in the country.
Lamenting poor sales, a businessman, Mr Chukwu Okolue, decried the inability of the Benue Government to pay workers’ salaries.
