THE atmosphere was filled with happiness as holy solemnisation was performed between the daughter of a former Amir of The Muslim Congress (TMC) and journalist, Hajia Safiyyah AbdurRasaq and her love bird, Dr. Abdur-Rasheed Olajide Iyanda.

The bride’s family popularly known as Aweyewaserere  from Ilota compound, Aran-Orin, Kwara State, played host to people from far and near, who converged on the open field of All Progressive Congress (APC) Secretariat, Oke-Ona, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The holy solemnisation was conducted by respected Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dhikrullahi Sha’fii, who doubles as Chairman, Conference of Islamic (CIO) Scholars in Nigeria.

The ceremony attracted creme de la creme from the Ilorin  Kingdom, Abuja and Lagos. Members of The Muslim Congress (TMC); Al-Mu’minaat; Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit and the Vanguards Old Students Association among others graced the wedding ceremony.

Other dignitaries, who attended the wedding included erudite Islamic scholar Sheikh Abdul Fatah Thanni; TMC Amir, Dr. Luqmon Abdur-Raheem; Prof. Abdul Hameed Adedeji of University of Uganda; Dr. Abdul Wasiu Gabadeen, University of Abuja; and former Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON) Alh. Abubakar Jijiwa.

In his sermon, Sheikh Sha’fii noted that marriage in Islam is an act of worship, saying it transcends being regarded “as a mere culture of fanfare.”

The cleric announced to the congregation that the bride price requested by the bride for the nuptials was a three-volume book titled ‘History of Islam’.

Describing the significance of bride price, he said, “The bride price supersedes every other item or money that comes with the ceremony.”

He, however, emphasized that bride price must not include any forbidden items, according to one of the four orthodox scholars of Islam, Imam Malik. 

Elated bride’s groom, Iyanda expressed happiness and thanked God, his parents, teachers and friends for their support.

Describing his experience, he said, “It’s not easy, but when one is focused, determined, he will overcome all self desires and urges that would have tailored one to commit lots of atrocities.”

The smile-full bride noted that the marriage has been an amazing experience of her, appreciating the love from his parents and all well-wishers.

Meanwhile, the bride’s father, Alh. Abdus Salaam prayed that the future of the couple should be fruitful.

He said, “We have done our own part by educating and grooming them to this level, I hope that from this level, they can take off living together according to the dictates of Islam.”

Iyanda, a native of Alasoro, Ifelodun Local Government, Kwara state, attended Al-Faruq International School before proceeding to Al-Faruq Comprehensive College, Lagos, where he graduated as the best student in Mathematics.

He tutored at Excell, De Formula and Peace Comprehensive Colleges before gaining admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin in 2007.

He has been an active member of MSSN Isolo Area Council and MSSN College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin and he is currently the Assistant General Secretary, Standard Bearers Islamic Organisation, Ilorin.

Hajia Saffiyah’s educational sojourn began at MIMS Primary School, Bariga.

She is a member of the famous G13, the first set of students to be admitted into Vanguards Academy, Odosengolu, Ogun State.

Like father like daugther, Hajia Safiyyah’s studied Mass Communication at the University of Ilorin and University of Lagos, UNILAG  for her B.Sc and M.Sc respectively.

She also bagged Diplomas in Human Resource Management, General Health Safety and Level 3 Health and Safety.

She served as corps member with Daily Trust Newspapers in Abuja. She is currently a journalist The Nation Newspapers in Lagos.
