Former governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Mukhtar Yaro, has said ethno-religious differences and regional issues were posing a great threat to the survival of the nation’s democracy.
He warned that unless the country set aside this “evil’ it would not make any meaningful headway in her democratic journey.
Yaro who was in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital for the unveiling of a group, ‘’To-be-connected Nigeria’’ held weekend at Le’meridian hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo said the strength of this country lies in her diversity.
But he lamented however that ethno-religious differences, political differences and regional issues were posing a great threats to her strength.
“Our diversity is our strength; we must set aside our ethno-religious differences, political differences and regional issues and until we are able to do this we will not make meaningful progress in our development process” he said.
The group, “To-be Connected Nigeria” is a non-governmental that seeks to break ethnic barriers that hinder progress by ensuring that talented Nigerians get connected irrespective of their ethnic or religious divide.
But Yaro said the lofty ideals which the group stand for can only be transformed the country into greatness if it begins consciously to pursue those ideals to logical conclusions.
He noted “it is when a southerner sees a northerner as one and vice versa that this country would make sustainable development.”
The former governor however noted that he had to cancel more than fifteen appointments to be in Uyo said he would not have there if he had followed or nurse any religious or ethnic issues.
He advised the group not to start romancing with government but to pursue it owns ideals until government sees it necessary to partner with it.
“I advise you today not rush and start inviting government but make sure to go ahead with your ideals until when government finds it necessary to partner with you,” he counselled.
