Dr Abubakar Ibrahim, the Chief Imam of Al-Abrar Mosque at Islamic Village, Ilorin, has warned against the
practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), saying that Islam forbids any act that is injurious to health.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

The practice has no health benefits for girls and women and can cause severe bleeding and problems in urinating, and later cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths.
The chief imam, therefore, said on Tuesday in Ilorin that “there is nowhere in the Holy Book of Islam, the Holy Qur’an, that states that females should be circumcised.

“It is, however, clear in the Hadith, which is a compilation of the deeds and sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad that males should be circumcised.

“So, Islam supports male circumcision and not females.”

The cleric, who is also the Provost of the Islamic Finance College, Ilorin, said “even though Islam is not in support of female circumcision, some Muslims
wrongfully do it on their girls.

“There are verses in the Holy Qur’an that condemn the practice of mutilating the human body.

“This is talking about the sanctity of the human body, as causing harm to the body without any religious justification is prohibited.

“This is in line with the word of Allah that His creation should not be altered.”

Ibrahim pointed out that modern scientists had also confirmed that FGM was harmful and could cause excessive bleeding, childbirth problems and
could reduce sexual libido.

The cleric observed that many Islamic scholars were of the opinion that it was not an obligation for women to perform circumcision,
except for men which was obligatory.

He added that “Islam is a complete way of life and has not left anything uncovered. It has provided ways, rules and regulations, as well as dos and donts of every act of life.”
