Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef is optimistic that tax payers would enjoy double reward and greater dividends of democracy.

The Commissioner stated this in a Jumat Sermon delivered at Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, Alausa today.

Delivering a sermon themed “Rights and Duties”, Dr AbdulLateef explained that for every right there are corresponding duties.

He said people have duties to themselves, families, relatives, neighbours, constituted authorities, government and above all their Creator.

The Commissioner maintained that those who pay taxes would enjoy good facilities when such funds are judiciously utilized and also rewarded by their Creator for obeying constituted authority.

“Part of your duties to constituted authority is obedience to the laws of the land, Promotion of orderliness and good governance with your actions which include payment of taxes”.

He explained that “Whenever you pay tax and your money is part of the resources that government used to construct roads, hospitals, schools and other amenities, you are indirectly worshiping your Creator”

According to Dr AbdulLateef, people are rewarded for paying tax by Allah because it is like giving out Sadaqah in Islam. Sadaqah is helping people in need which is highly rewarding by Allah, He stressed.

The Commissioner however urged those in position of authority to justify the confidence people repose in them stressing that everything that has beginning would surely come to an end one day.

“Politicians should remember that what they have in their care is a trust. Give people their dues to be safe before your Lord. You are not in anyway better than other citizens, play your role as individuals and leaders in the society”

ON OFFA ROBBERY INCIDENT

Describing the recent robbery attack in Offa which led to the death of many people as a disaster, the Lagos Home Affairs Commissioner said no human being in their right mindset will embark on such deadly mission.

Dr AbdulLateef called for more strict regulations of drug dispensary, stressing that what people consume these days cause many avoidable irrational behaviours mostly among the youths.

“Drugs, smoking turn some people into animals. People now have access to illicit drugs which lead to mental illnesses,” he added.

He said, “the increasing rate at which people consume Tramadol drug calls for attention. People should be mindful of what they drink, many items destroy sensibility. Many people who can’t kill fowls can kill human beings while under the influence of drugs.”

Dr AbdulLateef implored Nigerians to acquire their wealth legitimately rather than resort to ritual killings to make riches on their way of stardom.
