The affairs of Muslim students on University of Lagos campus is ready to take a new dimension with the emergence of a noble and efficient brother, Yusuf Olohungbebe, as the President of the society.

Yusuf Olohungbebe, that requested to be addressed as the “chief servant”, a 400-level student of the department of Urban and Regional planning becomes the sailor of the affairs of the Muslim students on campus amid jubilation from members of the MSSN UNILAG.

A congress, which held at Julius Berger Hall in the institution on Friday, ushered in Yusuf as the new president of the MSSN UNILAG BRANCH.



The Congress commenced with the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ademola Adeleke, welcoming the Muslim students, though complained about the lateness of the students to the congress.

He emphasised on strict adherence to the MSSN constitution and urged the students to embark on adequate consultations when they have programmes to execute.



After the DSA’s admonition, Mrs Bakare, an administrative officer of the Student Affairs Division called out the faculties shurah heads to announce the executives of various faculties.



The branch shurah chairman, Qaasim Akinlotan, stole the attention of the eager minds readying to know the branch leaders when it was his turn.


Yes! After much suspense, he announced an unexpected member as the Amir. He is Olohungbebe. Hypothetically, Yusuf Olohungbebe is a man of the people. 



Other executives that emerged are: Naibul Ameer (Administration): AbdulQadir Ahmad;  Naibul Amir: Sulaiman Abdullah;  General Secretar: Agbelekale Ja’far; Assistant General Secretary: Adeosun Sodiq; Financial Secretary: Muhammad Yahya; Public Relations Officer: Salami Ibrahim; Welfare: Luqman Uqbah; Asset Maintenance Officer: Balogun Abubakr; Internal Auditor: Adejumo Ibrahim; Director of Studies, Adisa Muritala; Muadhin: AbdulKareem Onimisi.

Interviews conducted for members of the congress affirms that the Amir-elect is a diligent, resilient, and humble brother who once served as the coordinator of Muslim Environmental Science Students Association and worked in various committees.



In an interview with IWitness NG, the Amir-elect, Faculty of Engineering, Hassan Salaudeen, explicitly stated that “Yusuff is a man of dignity and very hardworking.”

The shurah chairman, Qaasim Akinlotan, said that, “The emergence of Yusuf as the Amir is free from any conspiracy.”

He expressed optimism that “without doubt he (new amir) will surely deliver and perform beyond expectations.”

Imam Toyyib Al-Mustopha also expressed his profound gratitude to Allah. He urged the elected representatives to be patient, saying directing the Muslims on campus could be challenging.

He implored all the Muslim students to support with prayers, adding that “a huge storm awaits the leaders”.

Also speaking with iWitness NG, a former Amir of the branch, Rasheed Adeoye, described his feeling as ambivalent over the recent development.

He said, “My feeling is kind of ambivalent for him. Firstly, I am ecstatic that MSSN UNILAG is back and hope it’s better than before after about two years suspension. On the other hand, I pity him and the entire executives because this is an herculean task and a clarion call which requires dedicated efforts and selfless service.”


In an exclusive interview with IWitness NG, the branch’s Amir-elect sought support from members of the society. 


“Leadership is a trust and effective leadership requires nothing more than mutual co-operation,” Olohungbebe added.



Also, the Amirah-elect, Balqees Jumah, while expressing surprise over her emergence, implored all the Muslim students on the university campus to cooperate with the new executives.



Since the announcement of the new executives, there have been continuous jubilation both on the university campus and social media.

It is expected that the inauguration of the new executives will hold after the on going examinations in the university.
