The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, has said that over 10,000 applications were received from pupils who wanted to transfer from private to public schools this academic session.
Odeyemi however said the pupils could not be accommodated as a result of the on-going construction and renovation works in many of the state-owned schools.
He said this in Lagos on Monday when a delegation of parents and pupils, led by Mrs. Ramota Shamsideen, came to inquire why the transfer requests of their wards were not honoured.
Odeyemi appealed to the parents to bear with the government’s inability to effect the transfer this academic session.
“The state government has embarked on massive renovations, rehabilitation and construction of classrooms and new structures that would accommodate more students.
“Until all renovation and reconstruction is completed in schools to make a conducive learning environment achievable, the government would not be able to accommodate more students into any of its schools,’’ he said.
In her remarks, Shamsideen commended the state government for its efforts at upgrading school facilities. She, however, expressed displeasure of her team that their children have yet to benefitting from the efforts of government at achieving high standard of education in the state.
She also implored the government to give adequate consideration to admitting more pupils who wish to transfer from private schools to public schools in the next academic session.
