The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have asked students of the institution to resume next Wednesday.

The Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, said this in a press statement on Thursday.

The statement read, “The Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, has approved Wednesday, 3rd August, 2016 for the resumption of continuation of screening exercise for the new Students while the Stalites will come into residence on Sundays, 7th August, 2016.

“The Senate gave the go-ahead to reopen the Institution during a special meeting it held to consider a proposed amendment to this session’s academic calendar.”

The Acting Vice –   Chancellor, Professor Anthony Elujoba, who chaired the meeting for the first time after his appointment last Thursday, was thankful to the members of the Senate for the confidence reposed in him to lead the University at this period.

“While assuring that he would fearlessly attempt all the changes that will glorify the ‘life’ of the Institution in fearness, truth and justice, Professor Elujoba discloses that he has plans to seek, and to gather the main lessons derivable from the unfortunate episode that brought the University to where it is today and make recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” the statement added.

Recall that authorities of the OAU had shut down the institution over continuous protests and ‘civil disobedience’ by its workers.

The workers, under the aegis of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had since June 6 paralysed activities on the OAU campus.

Subsequently, they  petitioned President Buhari who summarily ordered the University Senate to pick a man of integrity to serve as the VC of the 54 years old University in acting capacity.

Following the directive, the Senate of the OAU held an emergency meeting where Pharmacognosist Professor, Prof.Anthony Elujoba, from Faculty of Pharmacy, was picked as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
