PARENTS SHOULD BE THE BEST PALS TO THEIR CHILDREN

By: Mar’yam Thawbaan

THE need for parents, especially mothers to be the closest friend to their children cannot be over-emphasized, in a world where children are now seen as tools to satisfy one’s immoral sexual urges.
A mother should ensure that no one is as close to her children especially the daughters,  than herself, to the extent that she would be free enough to inform her of any immoral advances from anyone, even the close or distant relatives.

A sister had just recently narrated her experience as an abused child while growing up. She was too scared of her mom and the mum was emotionally distant from her that she couldn’t even bring herself to tell her (mum) several years after, up until now.

However, she lives with the bitterness of being raped repeatedly at a tender age of eight years old, with no one to share her woes with except a weak sister who had no power to do naught as well.

“I went through series of abuses from childhood, was raped when I was eight-year-old, repeatedly abused during my Junior Secondary School years through high school and my mom never knew about it, even until now,” she said bitterly.

She became vulnerable after the first abuse; helpless, and shattered that she then grew up having a determination that she never want to have a female child.

“I always pray to God that when it is time for me to start having children, I don’t ever want a female child.

“My mom never gave us a chance near her, she was very mean to us because she said she had a rough childhood, she never heard our voices, didn’t create that space for us to be able to share our pains or worries with her. That was why I couldn’t tell her anything about what happened  to me then, I wasn’t sure about her reaction towards me,” she further revealed.

This sister is now a teenager, with a broken heart towards her mother, a sad childhood, and a determined mind that she would never let such befall her children.

“I’ll be the best of friends to my children,” she repeated, “but I don’t want a girl.”

Parents should therefore endeavour to bring their children closer to them, they should be actively involved in their children’s day-to-day activities, they should also create an approachable atmosphere around themselves so that the children would not be scared to inform them of any wrong done towards them by a bad person.

Girl children especially should be well mentored and monitored, the mothers should talk to them often, tell them about her good and bad choices while they’re growing up and lessons to be learnt therein.

Never leave them to themselves for too long as that might mean they’re already going through a phase and all they might need at that time is mother’s listening ears.

In conclusion, it is very important to make them feel loved and appreciated, make them feel special and cherished, try to provide their basic needs for them and never forget to raise them with the fear of Allah Almighty.
