An Abuja-based Islamic Cleric, Malam Yahya Al-Yolawi, on Friday admonished Muslims to avoid getting involved in any election-related offences before, during and after the Feb. 16 and March 2 general elections.

Al-Yolawi, the Chief Imam of Area 10, Garki Juma’at Mosque, gave the advice while delivering the Juma’at sermon titled “Islam and Politics’’ in Abuja.
The cleric also advised the electorate to follow the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of elections, set up by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the electorate should vote for candidates with proven integrity, and demonstrates ability to address the socio-economic and political challenges of the country.
Al-Yolawi admonished the people to vote for leaders who possessed all the attributes of a good leader, as stipulated in Islam.
He listed some of the attributes as knowledge, power, sound judgment, patience, justice, communication skills, piety, simplicity and truth.
“I will like to remind our brothers and sisters in Islam, who want to be entrusted with public funds and political leadership through election or appointments, to fear Allah and keep their Amana (trust) as their duty toward Allah and His messenger.
“I want Muslims to promote peace and harmony before, during and after the elections. Don’t kill, harm anyone or cause social disorder during elections,’’ Al-Yolawi said.
He lauded security agencies for maintaining law and order throughout the campaign, urging them to redouble efforts to sustain peace and stability during and after the elections.
Besides, the cleric enjoined parents and guardians to caution and monitor the conduct of their children throughout the elections.
