The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslims Graduates Association (UNIFEMGA) in collaboration with National Council of Nigerian Muslim Organisation (NCNMO), has carried out free surgery on 45 patients in Ile-Ife.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the Free Health Medical Mission, Prof Akeem Lasisi, a renowned professor of Ear, Nose and Throat stated this on Sunday in an interview with journalists at the OAU Health Centre, Ile-Ife.

Lasisi said that the surgeries entails different illness such as: cataract, diabetes, hypertension, Hepatitis B and general medical screening for patients.

He said the programme was in response to the alarming rate at which people are dropping dead because of health challenges and lack of adequate medical attention.

The LOC chairman, who is a staff of the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, (LAUTECH), Osogbo, said that giving back to the society is one of the greatest thing one can do to the community that gives so much to us.

In all, 267 patients had been screened for various ailments and 45 had undergone surgeries, saying the medical mission is meant for all in the society.

“The programme is solely financed by Obafemi Awolowo University Muslims Graduates Association and the Diaspora, added that this cater for the consumables and the drugs,”he said.

Lasisi commended the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede
for giving them access to the University Health Centre.

He appreciated further that the university other facilities were used to make the medical mission a success.

According to him, access to health care system is very important because years ago; the average life-span of a Nigerian is 48 years but today, its 54 years.

In the present day of modern technology, access to health care systems is close, but those who are not taking the advantage is because of ignorance or poverty.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Sarah Alonge, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) commended the organisers of the programme,, especially their kind gesture towards the less privileged.

Also, Mr Orioye Wahab, who did surgery on cataract, acknowledged the efforts of the UNIFEMGA and NCNMO, for assisting the masses who cannot afford hospital bills on different sickness.

Wahab called on other religious organisations , NGOs and other wealthy Nigerians to emulate the group in coming to the aid of the poor.

He also also appealed to the Federal Government to strive further to prioritise healthcare delivery service to carter for the poor for them to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
