After 42 years, a first class student finally emerged in the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin. He is 19-year-old Khalid Olatunji.
Olatunji, in this interview with Nana Aisha, says he dedicated efforts to making a record in the department.
Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Raji Khalid Olatunji. I’m 19 years old. I’m from Osun State.
Could you please talk about your sources of inspiration as a student during your undergraduate days?
The sheer desire to see my goals accomplished kept me motivated throughout my studies.
Hmmn, may I ask what those goals are?
To be top of my class as well as to graduate with a first class honours. Although, the latter was after my first year in school.
Did you take professional exams during your course of study? No
What were your major challenges as a student?
Same as all students. Coping with school stress, preparing for exams, etc.
Did you have any regrets as an undergraduate? No
Being a muslim student on a first class, did you get reactions from your non-muslim lecturers?
No. There was no discrimination.
What were you working tactics?
I don’t really have a reading schedule.. I read anytime and anywhere I’m able to.
Do you have mentors?
I learnt a lot from all the lecturers that taught me. So, they are in a way my mentors.
Do you mentor students or take some through if there is a need for it?
Yes.. I took some tutorials
Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years from now?
I don’t know about that. As it is said, Allah is the ultimate planner. Wherever I do find myself, I hope I’ll be able to make contributions in making the society a better place
What’s your advice to muslim students still in school?
Prayer, perseverance and dedication towards whatever goals they want to achieve.
