The management led by the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Olusola Kehinde has stopped no less than 7 Muslim students from attending lecture in the school which has sparked a series of protests from the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) of the school.
The MSSN branch which had set Saturday, September 9, to commence its annual weeklong programme tagged “Jihad Week” was disallowed access to the event venue due to an instruction from the Chief Security Officer (CSO).
It was also gathered that the leadership of the Muslim body had initially requested the university management’s approval to use an auditorium in the university before the event. However, the request was said to have been approved with the condition that the Muslim students sign an undertaking.
According to the Amir (President) of the Muslim students, Fadlullah Shittu, the school management asked him to sign an undertaking that Muslim sisters adorning the niqab (veils) will not attend the programme—a proposal which he described as laughable, which they said to have rejected.
In further explanation, the MSSN noted that aside from the public knowledge that the niqab is part of Islam, the expected attendees of the event were not only students but also included other guests who were invited from far and near.
After rejecting the school’s demand to sign an undertaking against members of his organisation, the MSSN noted that the venue for the event was changed to the University Mosque.
Muslim Students Protest
In a recent development, the members of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Branch of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), on Monday morning, protested the maltreatment and discrimination of the University management as it continues to victimise Muslim students who are rightfully expressing their fundamental rights.
