The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission has secured two farmlands for the commercial cultivation of date palm to boost revenue for its endowment activities.
The Commission’s Chairman, Malam Lawal Maidoki, disclosed this when he led other members of the commission to inspect the two farms at Tsamiya and Tureta districts in Tureta Local Government Area of the state.
Maidoki said that the initiative was also in line with the commission’s plan to plant economic trees across the 86 districts in the state.
“The inspection is in preparation for the cultivation of date palms as revenue generation source for our endowment activities to ease the suffering of the less privilege in the society.
“The commission has since secured date palms from Jigawa state which will soon arrive Sokoto for the take-off of the exercise.
“I want to assure you all that the programme is designed to support your living standard and want you to practice same for your personal benefit.
“This programme will serve as an avenue to improve Internally Generated Revenue and create more employment for the teeming youths in the state,’’ he said.
The chairman commended the districts and the village heads for their commitment toward ensuring success of the exercise.
In another development, the commission has disbursed 10 bags of millet as zakkat to the needy in Yangwali district of Tureta Local Government Area.
The commission’s chairman, who presented the items, called on small and big time farmers to always support the needy.
Maidoki also called on the beneficiaries to judiciously utilize the items to enhance their living standard and always pray for those that assist them.
In his remarks, the District Head, Alhaji Muhammadu Bello, urged his subjects to support government’s efforts by assisting the less privilege in the society.
He appealed to the commission not to relent in its commitment to ensure rapid development across the state.
