Chief Imam of Lagos, Alhaji Garuba Akinola Ibrahim, is dead.
Imam Akinola died of undisclosed ailment at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital at about 5 pm on Sunday, September 24.
The late Imam once worked with the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting before he was appointed the Chief Imam of Lagos.
Imam Akinola passed away at aged 100 and will be buried according to Islamic rite on Monday, September 25.
His turbanning and later official presentation of staff of office as the 9th Chief Imam of Central Lagos Mosque following the vacuum created by the death in 1998 of the former chief Imam, Alhaji Liadi Alade Ibrahim (OBE), took place in year 2000.
The official presentation of staff of office 30 July 2000, to Alfa Mohammed Garba Akinola Ibrahim (Gana V) as the 9th Chief Imam of Lagos Centra Mosque was a historical and colourful ceremony.
During the occasion, he was described as a good leader capable of managing the affairs of Islamic faithful in Lagos.
Islamic groups and leaders have however condoled with the deceased family and pray that Allah forgives his son.
“The Muslim students in Lagos State sympathise with the Muslim Community on the loss of our father, His Eminence, Garuba Akinola. We pray that Allah forgives him and grant him Al-janat ul-Firdaus,” Amir Saheed Ashafa said.
