A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 that hit central Morocco has killed at least 1,000 people and severely damaged many other locations.
When the earthquake hit on Friday at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT), residents hurried outside and scampered for safety.
From Casablanca to Marrakesh, where many structures have been demolished or severely damaged, “violent” vibrations were felt throughout the nation.
A three-day national mourning have been proclaimed to honour the scores of lives that have been lost by the nation’s royal palace.
It also stated that the military would send rescue teams to distribute tents, blankets, food supplies, and clean drinking water to the impacted communities.
It’s thought that many of the victims are in remote mountainous regions.
The High Atlas Mountains, 71 kilometers (44 miles) south-west of Marrakech, were the location of the epicenter.
Many people are still believed to be under the rubble and rescue efforts are under way. Several bodies have already been recovered.
